Nicola Ball Bsc., MSc.

Nicola started volunteering for the LGBT Excellence Centre in June 2011.  She graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2009 with Upper Second Class honours in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Psychology BSc. 

She then went to on to study an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice and graduated with a Merit in 2010, her MSc dissertation was titled “The Straight and Narrow Minded: an exploratory study looking at discrimination within the police force based on sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation”. 

She hopes to start a PhD within the next few months looking into homophobic hate crime and homicide.  

Whilst volunteering Nicola has been supporting the casework manager, set up an advice page on hate crime and helped with the organisation of the Come Out and Play conference, and any other work that comes her way!

Daniel Johnston

Dan joined the LGBT Excellence Centre in September 2011 after much determination! He helps in as many areas as possible; predominantly writing articles associated with the centre.

Born and raised in Swansea, Dan became public with his sexuality at the age of 14 during comprehensive school.

He has then since studied Media Production at Swansea College and currently studies Journalism at the University of Glamorgan, Cardiff.

He hopes to venture off into the Media Industry once graduated, but still play a major part with the Centre.

Joe Mavhondo

After moving to Wales in 2010, Joe joined Excellence Center in May 2011 as a volunteer, currently he is a helpline worker who deals with help line calls.

He has also helped making badges for the Come Out and Play Conference held in Cardiff recently as well as for the LGBT Asylum Seekers Group that he is a member of.

Joe also helps with making sure that the other members of the group are contacted few days before the group meets and he is always happy to get involved.

If all goes well he hopes to settle in Wales and to continue working for the Excellence Center to give help and support.

Hannah Loy 

Hannah Loy joined LGBT Excellence Centre as a volunteer in 2011. She graduated from Goldsmiths College, London, in 2003 and went on to work for various community radio projects and RSL's.

She joined the BBC in 2006 and has worked on The Proms, the children's radio programme 'Big Toe', the Radio 4 programme 'Last Word' and the Maida Vale digitisation project which led to archived programmes such as Desert Island Discs & the John Peel Sessions being available online for audiences to enjoy.

She moved to Cardiff in January 2010 and currently works as a Researcher for BBC Wales archives. Since joining the LGBT Excellence Centre as a volunteer she has helped out on the African Stories Project, which culminated in a short film premiered this year. The film consisted of a collection of nine stories told by GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) people from Africa. The film highlights the experience of GLBT people from African countries where homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment or worse.

Barry Lloyd

Barry began volunteering with the LGBT Excellence Centre in June 2011. He completed his BSc in Applied Psychology from Cardiff University in 2003 and specialised in the etiology and treatment of Eating Disorders having been a honorary research psychologist at St. George’s Hospital (London) and Huntercombe Manor Hospital (Maidenhead). 

Professionally, Barry has been involved in the operational and HR management of Health & Social Care services since 1994 for both the private and public sector (Cardiff County Council). In his most recent role he was registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales as a ‘Registered Domiciliary & Nurses Agency Manager’. 

In addition to being a full-time carer, his role at the LGBT Excellence Centre is to support the team with HR advice and assist the organisation in obtaining the quality standards: ISO 9001; Investors in People; and Investors in Volunteers.
