A bit of history:

The LGBT Excellence Centre started in April 2007 as a social enterprise and has celebrated huge successes in achieving better equality for LGBT people in employment, health care, housing, education and general living.

The charity was started by Federico Podeschi to address the need for support services on the ground that directly supported LGBT people in Wales and to bridge the lack of information and capacity between various organisations in Wales that deliver mainstream services to the wider community.

Its great and in-depth expertise and knowledge of sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales and in the UK make its helpline one of the first ports of contact for LGBT people and anyone who comes into contact with LGBT people.

LGBT Excellence Centre already has a track record of achievements and successes and has created many connections and networking opportunities with Welsh Assembly Government, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Voluntary Sector, Trade Unions, Local Health Boards, Police Forces, Fire Services, the Private Sector, thanks to working in partnership on the many projects it engages with.

LGBT Excellence Centre has been developed in order to achieve better financial viability and sustainability for LGBT community and public services to be developed and maintained without the need to rely on public funding. Some of the services offered aims to:

  • To address the high volume of requests for training on LGBT awareness and LGBT legislation
  • To provide stable and continuous funds for the Centre, community groups and other partners, not to rely on public and restricted funding.
  • To bring together expertise, knowledge, projects and programmes into co-ordinated, efficient, and effective operations that will address the above points.
  • Ensuring financial sustainability for the LGBT community and the voluntary sector by identifying opportunities for earned income.
  • Increasing first time employment opportunities for those on the margins of the labour market (long term un-employed and those with physical, learning, or mental health disabilities).
  • As a model for public service delivery, both as a way to engage in the externalisation of local authority services and to develop local suppliers.
  • Assisting entrepreneurs to bring social and environmentally produced goods and services to niche markets and solutions where there is market failure.
  • Achieving corporate social responsibility goals for the private sector.
